- My father, John Wolff, served with the 771st in HQ company. Never talked about his war time experiences. He was born in Germany and we are jewish. He was arrested, along with his father and brother, by the Gestapo on November 10th, 1938 and was sent to Dachau, was released along with his brother on December 25th, 1938, my grandfather died there. Made it to the states through France in February 1940. Was drafted in January 1943. I can not even begin to imagine what it was like for him to be a German in an American unit and to return to a country which he had struggled to leave.
