Woodrow L. Smith
Biography: Woodrow L. Smith was born on August 20, 1917 in Shelby, Mississippi.
Service Time: Woodrow entered the service on October 8, 1941 and was assigned to Recon. Company of the 701st Tank Destroyer Battalion. He received credit for five of the unit’s campaigns, including Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and the Po Valley. He received the EAME medal, American Defense medal and the Good Conduct medal. He also earned a Purple Heart for wounds he received. When he left the service, Woodrow was at the rank of Pfc.
After he returned to the states, Woodrow married the former Annie Pearl Siddon Phillips on June 4, 1946. She was the daughter of Thomas Siddon. The couple would reside in Winnsboro, LA and together have two children, James born in 1947 and Annis born in 1953. Woodrow worked as a farmer and a janitor of a high school prior to his death on July 12, 1975. He was laid to rest in Winnsboro, LA.
