816th Tank Destroyer Battalion

Unit History:  Formed on May 11, 1942, at Camp Cooke, CA as a Heavy Self-Propelled unit. They trained within the U.S at a number of military facilities, including Fort Polk, Louisiana, Camp Shelby, Mississippi, Camp Atterbury in Indiana and Camp Swift, Texas where they were attached to the 11th Tank Destroyer Group. The unit disbanded on Feb. 20, 1945, at Fort Knox, KY with their personnel being transferred to other units.

2.)  Dance Program & Roster – A tri-fold pamphlet done for the unit’s 2nd Anniversary of May 1944, recognizing the date when they were formed in May of 1942. The actual date of the dance is listed as May 30th while the unit was stationed at Camp Swift, Texas. The pamphlet includes a full roster of men. Although not listed in the roster, Russell L. Prewitt had served in the unit but may have already transferred out when the dance was held. Thank you to Russell’s son Thomas for providing the document.
