632nd TD Battalion
The frontline of 632nd TD Bn M-10 destroyers moving up under direction of a 32nd ID patrol along the beach at Aitape, New Guinea. July 31, 1944. Signal Corps photo #194725 from the National Archives.
Beach area chosen for night bivouac by 632nd TD Bn, 32nd ID, near Aitape, New Guinea. August 1, 1944. Signal Corps Photo #267951 from the National Archives.
Shown are brothers Cpt. James Arthur Zernecke "Jim" and Cpt. Herbert J. Zenecke, who had just rotated home from service in the South Pacific. They both served with the 632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion but this photo was a souvenir from The Blackhawk Restaurant located at Randolph at Wabash in Chicago. The photo is dated October 18, 1944, which was just over a month after Herbert had shipped home, on September 12th. Also shown is Jim's wife Doris and Herbert's wife Eleanor. They both served in a number of positions within the unit, with Jim commanding Company B and briefly taking over command of the battalion, while the Lt. Col. Fanning was assigned Special Duty with the 128th RCT Shore Party. Herbert served as C Company Commander but was later assigned as the battalion's Executive Officer.
