The photo is dated January 27, 1945, and was taken in the Lucca area of Italy. This was probably the location of the Fifth Army rest area, at that time. On far left, the Commanding General of the 1st Armored Division, Major General Vernon E. Prichard congratulates the captain of the 701st Basketball team, on winning the 1st Armored Division Tournament. The team captain is 1st Sergeant Earl L. Urban who served in Company C of the unit. Earl entered the service from Ashland, Ohio, and was later Killed in Action on April 23rd during action in Northern Italy. Photo courtesy of the Urban family.
