A great shot of the German "Sturmtiger", which was a heavy assult gun built on the Tiger I chassis. It fired a large navel rocket which required a crane to lift it to the loading hatch. Note the crane can be seen at the rear of the vehicle. The rounds weighed up to 830 lbs and required all five crew members to assist. More info can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturmtiger. Photo is from April 1945 and provided courtesy of Jack Brown Jr.

Just recently identified as Jay C. Reagle, who was actually a member of the Medical Detachment of the 773rd TD Battalion. The photo was taken by Jack E. Brown Sr. on August 20, 1945, who recognized Jay from back home in East Palestine, Ohio. The photo was identified as "Jay" and his pipe. As you can see, Jay was a Technician Third Grade who crossed paths with Jack somewhere in Europe. Photo courtesy of Jack Brown Jr.

A group photo of Army buddies taken prior to shipping out to England. Shown in back row, far right is Lloyd Rymer with T5 Ivan B. Madsen next to him. All others are unidentified. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Ivan B. Madsen standing with what is described as the M3 Half-tracks he drove around camp. From the look of the trees, it may have been Camp Claiborne, LA in August of 1943 just prior to their participation in the Louisiana manuevers with the Third Army. Madsen was a Technician 5th Grade at the time. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Many years later, B Company's Ivan Madsen on left and Commanding Officer Francis Wilts go through old documents and photos from the 823rd and talk about friends lost and battles won. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Pfc. James W. Grant on left with T5 Ivan B. Madsen in helmet. The other three members of the crew are sitting on top of their M10. Note the markings on front of the TD indicate that the unit was attached to the 9th Army. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.

A few friends blowing off some steam just prior to the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion shipping out to England from Boston in April of 1944. Shown L to R is and unknown soldier, T5 Ivan B. Madsen, T5 Frederick R. Sargent and another unknown soldier. Both Madsen and Sargent were from Utah. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
A photo of T5 Ivan B. Madsen on left with Pvt. Max W. Getz on right taken while in Germany. Both Getz and Madsen would earn Silver and Bronze Stars for their actions in against the enemy. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
T5 Ivan B. Madsen (in helmet) and his crew during the winter of 1944-45 and the Battle of the Bulge. Note the white camouflage draped over their M10. The unit had just began to receive M10s in December and the entire unit wasn't converted to being self-propelled until sometime in January. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Ivan B. Madsen and his crew, with another crew, barely visible to the rear, load what looks like ammunition into their highly white-washed M10s. Location is the bank of the Roer River. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
T5 Ivan B. Madsen on left with an unknown Staff Sergeant of B Company. The roster identifies only six soldiers at that rank. This photo was probably taken late in the war since he has three foreign service stripes on his uniform sleeve, each indicating 6 months. I am not positive but I believe the individual ribbon over his right pocket may be the Distinguished Unit ribbon awarded to B Company for actions near St. Barthelemy, France on August 7, 1944. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
An obviously relaxed Ivan B. Madsen at what appears to be a supply truck. The other soldiers are unknown. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
T5 Ivan B. Madsen hold one of the 3" shells used by the M10. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
B Company's T4 Paul J. Vavuris and T4 Charles T. Widdop stand at the rear of an M10. The main gun is facing rearward in the driving position and it looks like both the main gun and the .50 cal. machine gun have covers on them. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Shown L to R are Cpl. Robert W. Tietz, an unknown soldier and T5 Ivan B. Madsen. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Cpl. Robert W. Tietz of B Company on right with an unknown soldier. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Two good friends pose for a photo. On left is T5 Frederick R. Sargent with T5 Ivan B. Madsen on right. Additional research by Madsen's daughter identified that Sargent was born in Panguitch, UT and was wounded in action. He spent 10 months in a hospital in Nurnberg, Germany. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Reunion photo from 1987 of a few of the Utah members of the 823rd. Shown in front row L to R is Clark Williams, Keith Barrett, Kent lee, Charles Nelsen, Wilford Davies and Leon Shaw. Back row L to R is Ivan Madsen, Lloyd Rymer, Nard Jacobsen, Merrill Gurr, Bill Higgins, Max Getz and Earl Sampson. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
A TD Crew with their M10. This particular unit looks like it might have some type of cover over the turret. It also looks like the man in the center is holding a captured German Sub-Machine gun. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
A row of TDs ready to ship home after the war. These are late model "Duck-bill" M10s that the 823rd had only received in December of 1944. Prior to that, the unit used 3" Towed Guns. Notice all the M10s have similar stowage racks that were probably added in the field. Two unidentified soldiers on left with T5 Ivan B. Madsen is on right. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
This formerly unidentified soldier has since been identified as T/5 Robert Arrighini by his daughter Roberta. He was from B Company and is wearing the Distinguished Unit Ribbon over his right pocket. I also noticed he only has four Campaign Stars on the EAME Ribbon over his left pocket. The 823rd participated in five campaigns, so this photo may have been taken prior to him receiving the fifth star or he may have not participated in one of the campaigns since he had been wounded in October of 1944. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Another unknown soldier of the 823rd. The position of his side arm make me think he was not normally in a TD and was probably one of the higher ranking NCOs, such as a Staff Sergeant. The side arm worn on the hip would be constantly catching on something when in or around the TD. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
An unknown soldier of the 823rd. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
An unknown soldier at the front of an M10 of the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. At the time, they were attached to the 9th Army. The sign above the door reads "Gasthof" which is German for Inn or Hotel. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Another unidentified soldier. Unusual insignia on his helmet that I was unable to make out. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Group of unidentified soldiers, each enjoying a beer. This was probably taken after hostilities had ceased. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Cpl. Eural D. Haddock of B Company who is thought to have been one of the unit's Armored Car drivers and drove Headquarters personnel from place to place. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.

As was the case many times, tank destroyers were used to support infantry operations. Here a large group of infantry soldiers of the 30th Infantry Division catch a ride with a column of TDs of the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. Photo courtesy of Darla Madsen Tolman.
Erected on August 25, 1946, a monument to the "La bataille du bois d'Ere" was placed at the edge of the wood to commemorate the battles that occurred on September 3, 1944, near the Belgian border. The inscription reads as follows: To the everlasting glory of the U. S. Army and to commemorate the gallant combat fought on 3/9/1944 against the German invaders by Lt Col. Stanley Dettmer's Tank Destroyer Bn., 1st U. S. Army, this stone has been erected.
This is one of a number of photos from veteran Robert L. Newton "Bobby" from Los Angeles, California. Bobby served in B Company of the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion and served with them throughout the war, transferring to B Company of the 629th TD Bn prior to his discharge.
