Jerry Willis

  • My father is James D. Willis who was with the 817th TD BN. Co. A when they left Fort Hood. He is listed as being attached to the Headquarters Company in this web roster. He drove ammo truck and later was assigned to drive jeep for staff. My dad will be 94 as of this writing and has never talked of the war until just recently. He is an amazing man who lived through an amazing time. He is my hero.

  • Thank you for this very informative site! I'm trying to learn a little more about my grandfather's life-he passed away over 30 years ago when I was very young. He was Julian "Jake" Storms of Co B 636th. According to my grandmother, he never spoke about the war after he returned home. Your site has given me some insight into his time in service. Thank you.

T. Mohr

  • I post this to honor my Father John R. Mohr (Rudy) he served with the 824 TD as a Sergeant in Company B. He was a gun section commander and then when the unit converted to the M18 Hellcats a vehicle commander. His driver was Pete Amico. I don't know the name of the rest of the crew but the Platoon Commander was Lt. Sheridan I believe.

  • Thanks so much for the site. I was able to find out the most about my father's 813th TDBN here. Including photo. It was easy to find him Michael Laino he was one of the few with a moustache.

  • Mr. Haldeman, Thank you for putting this domain together. I'll provide additional information as I locate it. My father was from Jackson Miss and received the Bronze Star. When he returned the newspaper wanted to interview him and he wouldn't have it. His mom made him call back to agree to the interview. A year later he married the reporter. 8)

  • My wife's grandfather (Melvin Johnson) who just recently turned 90 years old was assigned to B Co, 629th TD BN. He arrived later in January 1945. He was originally assigned to the Mountain Division at Camp Hale CO as a Ski Instructor. He went home on emergency leave from Camp Hale and the Division deployed before he came back. He was then assigned to drive Tank Destroyers. This was bit of a change for him. He talked about Dachau and the TD that fell through the Remagen Bridge into the Rhine. The AAR on this site that is a "poor scan" talks about the TD that fell through the Bridge. Melvin was lead TD in that column, but pulled over to pull someone out of a ditch. Lucky for him and his crew maybe? He met his wife in Germany after the war, she was actually in the Germany Army during the war. Very interesting history. This website was very helpful to fill in the gaps. Thank you.
