- Dear Mr. Haldeman, My great uncle, 1st Lt. Nathan Baskind, was a commander in the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion. Last year, his remains were found in a German mass grave after being missing in action for 80 years. I'm writing a book about Nate, from his origins as the child of Eastern European Jewish immigrants, to his years in the Army, and then his death and recovery of his remains. The book culminates with the outpouring of love across borders since the discovery of his remains and subsequent burial with full military honors at Normandy American Cemetery. Here are just a few articles among many about that: https://www.abmc.gov/news-events/news/wwii-1st-lt-nathan-b-baskind-laid-rest-normandy-american-cemetery-full-military/ https://www.operationbenjamin.org/nathanbaskind https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/21/opinions/d-day-normandy-operation-nathan-baskind-benjamin-baskind https://www.dpaa.mil/News-Stories/ID-Announcements/Article/3771723/tanker-accounted-for-from-wwii-baskind-n/ https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/jewish-american-soldier-who-died-in-wwii-identified-after-80-years-in-german-mass-grave-180984614/ I would like to be in touch but can't find contact information. My email is above, and if you could reach out I would be most grateful. Thank you very much for the important work you do, Samantha Baskind
