Mike Mastruserio

  • It was a blessing to discover the letters that my grandfather Elmer H. Stahl wrote to my mom when she was a little girl while he was serving with the 773rd during WWII. Mom passed away in 2007 and I now have the letters in the same vintage metal Johnston Chocolates box that mom kept them in since she was 9 year old. The letters are very tender and precious, written at a time that I can't imagine the things that grandpa and his buddies had to do and see under the conditions that few will ever experience. God Bless these hero veterans and their families.

  • Thank you for all of the information contained within this wonderful website! My grandfather served in the 629th Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII from 1944-1945 in Europe. I have in my possession one of his panther patches, his original honorable discharge paperwork, and many photographs (sadly none are labeled). I have become very interested in trying to learn more about his time in the Army, as he never shared a lot and he passed away in 1996 when I was only 12 years old. I have really enjoyed searching through this website for additional information about his unit. I am also on a mission to replace his medals, as they were stolen when someone broke into his home in the 1980's. I have learned so much from your site - thank you!

  • I bought and have owned the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer with manufacturers number 2023 and USA registration number 40145899 for the last 24 years. The vehicle was restored in Northern Italy in 1949 by Brown & Root and given to the Yugoslavs (Tito) in 1950. The vehicle was taken away frorm the Serbian National Guard in the 1990’s at the conclusion of the peace in the Yugoslav conflict. M18 ‘899’ returned to the USA via Great Britain in the Littlefield tank collection purchase and entered the US via the Port of Houston in January, 2002. I’d very, very, interested in seeing if I can dig up and any history on 40145899 as I believe it was one of the ones in northern Italy and a good chance it may have been in the 805th TD battalion. Any help locating WWII pictures of that specific vehicle, any of its crews’ names, or photos of the actual vehicle would be very exciting.   • My uncle, John Prendergast, from Utica, New York, was part of the 801st. He was killed during a training accident at Fort Hood, Texas in April 1943. There was always a lot of mystery about how he was killed. When John's body arrived home for burial, his brothers found a huge depression wound in John's chest. They theorized that it may have been from the recoil of a tank's 75-caliber gun. To complicate matters, the jeep transporting John to the hospital was in an accident and overturned en route. My question: Do any of the children of those 801st soldiers remember any stories their fathers may have told about this accident? My family has always longed for details of this and the Army would never describe what happened. I realize that this is a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone, somewhere might be able to supply information about what happened to my uncle.
