Hello, My grandfather Ivan W. Allis served in HQ Company of the 817th. He passed away nearly a year ago. I have always been very interested in the Tank Destroyers and have recently been able to devote more time to researching and reading. My grandmother was so pleased today when I told her about the site and I showed her the official roster that I obtained from the site. I have had a hard time finding more detailed and personal accounts/pictures of the 817th. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Took basic and advanced TD training at North Camp Hood from July 1944 - Jan. 1945. Was sent to Germany and was assigned to the 771st TD Bn, a NJ National Guard unit that was activated in 1941 (I think). They were in North Africa, then to Italy and into Germany. When the war ended in Germany, I was sent back to US and assigned to the 643d TD Bn in San Luis Obispo, CA.

My Dad, Paul E.Rush served in 1st Platoon, Company B, 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion.
He didn't talk much about his times in WWII, but thanks to this web site, I found out that as a M-18 Gunner, while defending Bastogne, he knocked out two enemy tanks (Mark VI)in a day, One a single shot at 800 yards.
I'm so proud of him.
